About Savegre River Basin

The Savegre River Basin is one of Costa Rica's most ecologically significant and well-preserved river basins, located in the southern region of the Central Pacific zone. Originating high in the Talamanca Mountain Range, the Savegre River flows from cloud forests through unspoiled tropical rainforest before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. Due to its clean waters and intact ecosystems, the basin has been internationally recognized as one of the cleanest tropical watersheds worldwide, supporting a vast array of plant and animal species, including rare birds like the Resplendent Quetzal and myriad amphibians. The area spans several protected reserves, including the Los Quetzales National Park and the Savegre Natural Reserve, which play crucial roles in conserving water quality, wildlife habitat, and forest cover. Outdoor recreation is centered around hiking trails leading through primary and secondary cloud forests, waterfalls, and wildlife sanctuaries. Visitors can explore the Savegre Valley on foot, spotting rare orchids, peccaries, and colorful birds. The basin is also an important area for sustainable coffee plantations and local indigenous culture. Notable landmarks include the Savegre Waterfalls, Monteverde cloud forest proximity, and the Rio Savegre’s dramatic canyon sections. The region’s appeal lies in its remote, tranquil setting with opportunities for adventure, birdwatching, and ecological study, making it a prime destination for eco-travelers and nature enthusiasts who wish to experience Costa Rica’s famed biodiversity off the beaten path.
